Massachusetts Makes Solar More Affordable

MA has some of the strongest residential solar incentives in the country — and with the federal ITC expiring January 1, 2026, SMART 3.0 is now the single most valuable incentive available to Massachusetts homeowners.

MA SMART 3.0 — $0.03/kWh for 20 Years

The redesigned SMART program pays residential owners a fixed $0.03/kWh for every kilowatt-hour produced — for 20 years. Add battery storage for an extra +$0.04/kWh adder. A typical 8 kW system with battery earns ~$960/year in SMART payments alone, on top of net metering savings.

MA SMART 3.0 — Net Metering on Top

SMART payments run alongside standard net metering credits — they are additive, not a replacement. A typical Greater Boston home earns ~$2,270/year in net metering savings plus ~$960/year in SMART payments for a combined annual benefit around $3,230.

MA State Tax Credit — 15% (up to $1,000)

Massachusetts offers a 15% state income tax credit on your system cost, capped at $1,000. Applies to purchased systems at your primary residence — file Schedule EC with your MA return.

Property Tax Exemption — 20 Years

Solar adds $15,000–$25,000 in home value on average — and MA exempts that value from your property tax assessment for 20 years.

Common concerns in Greater Boston
  • Older roofs may need repair before installation — we assess and coordinate
  • Tree shading is common — we model production accurately, won't oversell
  • HOA approval sometimes required — we've handled it many times
  • Historic district restrictions — we advise on ground-mount or alternate options

What Our Clients Say

Sorted by most recent. All reviews sourced from Yelp.

Mar 15, 2026

"Had Elite Contractors renovate my home. Absolutely top shelf company. The quote I received was lower than two previous quotes from competitive contractors. The team arrived and began with the demo — fast, neat, and prepped in no time. The carpentry is perfection. Kevin's suggestions from the beginning were spot on and he delivered as promised. Highly recommend!! The best!"

"I needed my shower walls redone due to the window not being water tight. Elite Contractors were very quick to respond and were willing to be flexible on the price when I mentioned I'd source some of the materials. They did a great job, and when I had concerns after they finished, they were willing to come back and take care of it. I would recommend them."

"My husband and I met with Kevin, one of the owners. His price was excellent! We were liking everything he presented. Kevin was very friendly, polite, and definitely knew his stuff. Elite is not out to charge high prices — Kevin wants to help people and not break them. My search ended right there."

Common Questions

A typical Greater Boston home (7–10 kW system) runs $22,000–$32,000 before incentives. The federal residential ITC expired January 1, 2026, but Massachusetts still offers strong stacked incentives: the 15% MA state tax credit (up to $1,000), 20 years of SMART 3.0 production payments, net metering credits, and a 20-year property tax exemption on the added home value. We model the full picture in your written quote after the site assessment.

Yes — and better than most people expect. Modern panels produce in diffuse light, not just direct sun. Snow slides off angled panels quickly, and cold temperatures actually improve panel efficiency. MA homeowners produce roughly 70–80% of annual output in April–September, with meaningful production year-round.

The Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target (SMART) Program, now in its 3.0 version, pays you a fixed $0.03/kWh for every kilowatt-hour your system produces — for 20 years — on top of your standard net metering bill credits. Additional adders apply for battery storage (+$0.04/kWh) and low-income households (+$0.03/kWh). The program is open to Eversource, National Grid, and Unitil customers. We check current capacity availability by territory before you sign anything.

Most asphalt shingle and standing-seam metal roofs in Greater Boston work well. South-facing pitch is ideal but west and east-facing arrays still produce well. We won't install on a roof with less than 7–8 years of life remaining — and we'll tell you honestly if yours needs work first. Heavily shaded or flat membrane roofs may require a ground-mount alternative.

Physical installation takes 1–2 days for most homes. Permitting and utility interconnection typically add 4–8 weeks before your system goes live — this timeline is set by your municipality and utility, not us. We manage the whole process and keep you updated at each step.
