Massachusetts Makes Solar More Affordable
MA has some of the strongest residential solar incentives in the country — and with the federal ITC expiring January 1, 2026, SMART 3.0 is now the single most valuable incentive available to Massachusetts homeowners.
The redesigned SMART program pays residential owners a fixed $0.03/kWh for every kilowatt-hour produced — for 20 years. Add battery storage for an extra +$0.04/kWh adder. A typical 8 kW system with battery earns ~$960/year in SMART payments alone, on top of net metering savings.
SMART payments run alongside standard net metering credits — they are additive, not a replacement. A typical Greater Boston home earns ~$2,270/year in net metering savings plus ~$960/year in SMART payments for a combined annual benefit around $3,230.
Massachusetts offers a 15% state income tax credit on your system cost, capped at $1,000. Applies to purchased systems at your primary residence — file Schedule EC with your MA return.
